Most companies use relocation policies based on certain qualifiers when moving their employees.  But, what happens when an employee doesn’t easily fit into a policy slot?

Most employers spend significant time developing policies designed to facilitate relocation for their organization. These relocation policies are typically designed around specific qualifiers such as new hire vs. current employee or are based on job title, salary grade, or other hierarchical levels within the organization.

 

When it is time to relocate an employee, the employee and family are “slotted” into a relocation policy designed around one or some combination of these qualifiers. The employee must adjust their relocation needs and timetable to the specific rules outlined in the policy. This approach begs the question, “What does title, salary grade, or other status have to do with providing the specific support that an employee or family needs?” The obvious answer is, “Not much.”

This approach can lead to frustration for the employee and higher costs for the employer. The issue is that the employee tries to fit their relocation needs into a pre-designed program, sometimes spending money where it is not necessary; and more often, not getting the help they need.
